What will I see while kayaking the Siltcoos River Trail?

As you kayak from Siltcoos Lake to the Pacific Ocean, you will paddle through incredibly diverse coastal ecosystems. The trail winds through a dense forest of towering Doug firs, vibrant native wildflowers, and tons of beautiful hydrangeas before opening up to the massive coastal sand dunes. Along the water, keep an eye out for incredible local wildlife paddlers frequently spot deer on the banks, river otters, great blue herons, diving kingfishers, and a couple of ospreys overhead, all while bright blue dragonflies skim the water's surface right alongside your boat.

How long is the Siltcoos River Trail for kayaking?

The Siltcoos River Canoe Trail is a 6-mile round trip (3 miles each way) from Siltcoos Lake out to the Pacific Ocean beach. To give yourself enough time to paddle at a relaxed pace and enjoy the beach, plan for about 4 to 6 hours, making it the perfect half-day adventure. You can also turn back at any time (Pro-tip: Try to time your return trip with the incoming ocean tide so the current helps push you the 3 miles back to our dock!)

You can catch largemouth bass and cutthroat trout year-round, with the warm summer months (June through September) being the absolute best time for bass fishing near the islands and docks. The lake is also legendary for its wild Coho salmon runs, which peak in the fall from October through December. We offer fishing gear rentals right at the front desk so you can cast a line directly from our private dock!

Winter is the best time to see massive flocks of migratory waterbirds, like grebes, American coots, and various waterfowl resting on the lake. All kayak rentals include properly fitted life jackets, oars, and bottled water. Note: Coastal weather can change quickly, so for your safety, we do not rent kayaks when wind conditions are extreme.
